Marvin's Puppet Making Page
Plastic Milk Carton Puppet
1. Carefully cut away a rectangle from the back of a plastic milk carton, big enough to put your hand in
Important: Ask an adult to help you when working with the craft knife , scissors and hole punch
2. Turn the milk carton upside down and using a craft knife make slits around what will be the head of the puppet
3. Cut a dish cloth or some old clothes into thin strips.
4. Fold the cloth strips in two and push them into the slits using a Kebab or chopstick
5. With a pair of scissors cut a plastic lemon in half.
6. Cut the lemons into ear shapes and leave some tabs to attatch them to the carton head.
Remember to cut a left and right side
7. Cut slots in the side of the carton head that will match up with the ear tabs.
The carton handle is the nose so it faces to the front.
8. Push the tabs on the plastic ears into the slits on the head
9.Place a bottle top on a block of wood and pierce a hole through the centre with a hole punch
10. Push a paper fastener through the hole in the bottle top
11. Make a hole with the hole punch on either side of the milk carton handle
12. Hold the bottle top eye up to the hole and push the paper fastener through. Put your hand inside and open the fastener tabs. Repeat with other eye
And there you have it a 'Rubbish Puppet'
Now let your imagination run wild. Before you add the hair and features why not paper mache the carton to change the shape of the nose, cheekbones and brow. Eyes could be made from bottle tops, old buttons. Eyes of different shapes could be cut out of a serial packet . And instead of hair what about a hat or both. Have fun and help our planet at the same time!
